About me

Android pic of the author

Hello my name is Neil, and I am a Flash Developer I like building stuff, especially nice apps. This isn't the real text by the way it's just some placeholder text

It comes in handy so that you can see what it will look like while you are building your site. The problem is you need so much of it, that's why people use Lorem Ipsum, they also use it because most people can't understand Latin, so they focus on the layout instead.

Sometimes you just have to waffle on about why the Moon's gravity is weaker than the Earths, well its because it is a smaller body and has a smaller mass. This means it doesn't distort spacetime as much as the earth does, astronauts had to wear lead moon boots to stop them floating up to high when they jumped.

Work

Lexus

I have been developing for Lexus for over 5 years, often working in a team developing in ActionScript 2 and ActionScript 3. All projects are now built on a solid framework which is layered on top of PureMVC.

Lexus CT200h Explorer

Similar to the previous minisite and again working as part of a team, the aim was to bring the experience into the main site, this was achieved by using lightbox to hold the videos and images.

Interior and exterior styling was also made available but confined to dynamic panels, due to the lack of space.

A series of interactive hotspots serve as a portal into each feature which opened in the lightbox overlay.

External interface communication between flash and JavaScript was used to pass information between the lightbox implementation and back to flash, helping to disable clutter.

Lexus CT200h Showcase

This minisite was built to showcase the launch of the new LEXUS CT200h. The site was built by a team of developers using Flash Player 10 for native 3D effects.

A 3D wall was used for many areas of content with a flipping effect on a series of tiles which were then made interactive to view the various features.

We also included streamed video from a CDN and also integrated the YouTube plugin for the Gallery section

The user was able to view a 3D render of the exterior and interior of the car, and interact with various styling options.

Lexus Range

Offering a rich interactive experience was the aim of this project. The data for each group of models was consumed from various Web Services which provided a high level of configurablilty across all locales.

The solution was broken down in to 3 logical sections, main group selection, model selection and model 360° view of the model.

Deep linking was provided to allow linking from any url to a section of the application. Transitions featured heavily in this project utilising the TimlineMax library by Green Sock.

Toyota Europe

In this tutorial, we are creating a photo shoot effect with our just-released PhotoShoot jQuery plug-in. With it you can convert a regular div on the page into a photo shooting stage simulating a camera-like feel.

Toyota Range

Built entirely in flash fullscreen mode, this flash project involved beautiful 3D renders and subtle audio sounds and loops to enhance the experience.

A requirement was to allow the user to feel as though they are moving among the models, this was achieved by creating a kind of frame buffer, by monitoring the frame loading and allowing the user to move forward or backward between the frames.

Toyota LRVT

Le Rendezvous Toyota is an innovative centre in Paris, home to many touchscreen installations called 'pods' which I have worked on. These vary from from pod to pod, written initially in Actionscript 2 then migrated to Actionscript 3.

Animation featured highly in these projects, my role was to write the pod scructure to manage the presentation and pod state which included dynamically updating content between french and english languages.

Coca-Cola Enterprises

The work I have done for Coca Cola ranges from small web based projects to a rather demanding AIR application which is currently being used to generate internal interest in the upcoming London 2012 Olympic Games.

I really enjoy the projects for this client as they are always open to new and interesting ideas.

GPS Tracklog Viewer

Using Google Maps for Flash, this is an Adobe AIR application which allows the user to load and view kml tracklog files. They have colour gradients applied to distinguish changes in altitude. This was achieved by writing a bespoke overlay extending the Google Maps BaseOverlay.

Future enhancements are planned to show thermal hotspots if the kml is from a glider flight for example.

Coke Olympic Showcase

The AIR application is built on the solid Pure MVC framework. It is responsible for maintaining an internal clock which syncs with the system clock and reads in a schedule at regular intervals.

Various types of content can be displayed fullscreen or in one of four quadrants, the content can be html, video, images, animations or slideshows.

Web Services are used to authenticate with a SharePoint server which hosts all the content, the AIR application downloads and caches these items.

Personal Projects

When I am not working on client projects I am constantly trying to keep up with the various changes in technology. One of the ways to do this is to work on a personal project.

Working on a personal project gives you the freedom to explore areas you are interested in, but require motivation to complete them when there are no formal deadlines.

3D Screensaver

Using the Papervision 3D library and the Bend Modifier add on, this screensaver shows images in a revolving carousel which has parameters to change its behaviour.

The images are referenced through xml and the project is converted to a screensaver online.
